Can you see the fnords?
What is a fnord? Well they appear in the Principia Discordia and the Illuminatus! trilogy. In the former they are not really described, the word just appears randomly about the place, but in the second children are taught not to see them in school using fear. “If you can see the fnords, they will eat you! Don’t see the fnords!”
Then when these children grow up, whenever they read something that contains the word fnord, they fail to register it consciously. But subconsciously the word triggers a fear response that prevents them from responding rationally. In this way the conspiracy uses the word to manipulate and control the amount of fear felt by the populace at any one time. When they need to generate more fear, they slip extra ‘fnords’ into the newspapers.
Okay, but that was fiction, but do fnords exist in reality? Or something like them? I’ve started to suspect that they do. However I don’t believe that there is one universal fnord that affects all of us. Instead, we each have words or subjects that make us feel uneasy and which we block out from our conscious, and these might be different for us all. Recently I discovered some of mine, and once I did I began to see them everywhere. Instead of producing anxiety and fear in me, I instead felt able to laugh about them.
Here are some examples of fnords, think of some others:
- Magick and the Occult: Probably not a fnord for regular readers of this website, but for many of the population a very powerful fnord.
- UFOs and Aliens: A very big and powerful fnord for many, including the majority of magicians.
- The New Age: Another big and powerful fnord for magicians, but also for UFOlogists and materialists.
- Anarchism: If this word makes you think of people in black wearing masks and throwing Molotov cocktails, then its a fnord for you.
